Overtraining is an ambiguous term, especially in the context of body building or strength training. The main goal for working out or going to the gym is to provide the body with physical stress. This physical stress causes tears in the muscle tissue. When these tears are repaired, the muscle tissue gets stronger and bigger. The challenge for athletes or bodybuilders is to have a fitness routine that will provide the right amounts of physical stress, but they must also be able to identify when the stress is too much. Hence, it is very important for any individual to know the symptoms of overtraining.What is overtraining?
Overtraining is a condition that encompasses the body, mind, and emotion of an individual. Because of this, overtraining can be difficult to identify and its symptoms can vary from person to person. Overtraining from a purely physiological stand point happens when a person trains too much and is not getting enough rest. As a result, the body is not given enough time to recuperate.
With overtraining, the body can lose muscle mass. The body does not have enough time to repair the small tears in the muscle tissue. An individual experiencing overtraining is at high risk of developing protein deficiency since the body is using amino acids at a much faster rate.
The strain from overtraining can create problems in the nervous and endocrine systems. Overtraining can lead to overtraining syndrome. At this point, the level of cortisol or the body’s stress hormone is too high for too long. Because of the elevated levels of cortisol, the body no longer responds effectively not only to cortisol, but all other hormones such as insulin, estrogen, and testosterone. The individual experiences mood swings, chronic fatigue, and insomnia. Furthermore, the person will have difficulty focusing.

- Depression
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Weakened immunity
- For women, absence of menstruation
- Heart palpitations
- Excessive weight loss
How to treat overtraining?
The most important step in treating overstraining is to recognize the signs of physical stress. There are individuals who get addicted to working out or exercising. In this state, it would be very hard for a person to feel the overtraining symptoms. In this case, another person should step in, a friend, relative, or trainer. Once a person realizes that he or she is suffering from overtraining symptoms, the individual must rest and take a break from training. Changes should be made in the person’s diet and physical routine.
Improved recovery and more mental energy can be a feature of many of the supplements, so can go a long way to preventing and treating overtraining.
